Championship rules

The rules of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, or Brasileirão, are established and defined by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) and follow international football competition standards.

Times: There are 20 participating clubs that play each other in back-to-back matches over 38 rounds.

Tied points: Serie A is played on a straight points format, where each win is equivalent to +3 points, each draw is equivalent to +1 point and defeats do not count. The team with the most points at the end of the 38 rounds is crowned champion.

Tie-breaking criteria: in the event of a draw in the number of points at the end of the championship, the tie-breaking criteria are usually the number of wins, goal difference, goals scored and head-to-head.

Disciplinary rules: The Brasileirão follows disciplinary rules established by the IFAB (International Football Association Board) which include punishments for players and even the committee, with yellow and red cards, as well as suspensions for accumulating cards.

Player registration: Each participating club can register a limited number of players for the season, in accordance with current CBF regulations.

Arbitration: league matches are conducted by referees and assistants trained and certified by the CBF, who apply the rules in accordance with FIFA guidelines during matches.
